What is the point of a pedal? I have been playing guitar for about 4 months now. Is it worth buying?

If you're talking effects pedals, there are probably millions available, so you can't all classify them as one thing. Effects pedals are things put either between your guitar and amp, or in your amp's effects loop; their purpose is to somehow alter the sound.

A wah pedal changes the tone of your guitar and making it sound somewhat like someone saying "wah" as you move the pedal to control the amount. A volume pedal alters the volume based on the pedal position. Multi-effects are digital effects pedals with numerous and varied on-board effects, usually with multiple pedals to select between different presets. Distortion/overdrive should sound like your amp's gain channel, with quite literally thousands of variations; fuzz, overdrive, distortion, etc. etc. You can't really describe these, as there are so many variations and colors of the sound they can produce.

Erm, check out the sound demos at www.bossus.com for a better idea.

Not necessarily. They're expensive, and none of their effects (usually) are very high-quality. If you want a wide range of sounds that don't all need to be "great," multi-effects are nice.

If you have no use of your feet, you can buy just about anything available in a rack mount version. THis you could set up on your amp and be in arms reach.

A good multi effects pedal would be a Behrringer XV-AMP its got 100 auto effects and u can program your own to it. It's a good multi effects processor. it has a foot pedal and many effects including Wah-Wah, Sreamer, Nu-Metal gain, Phasers and many more. its a great buy too. I paid $150 and their were pedals there that had less effects for more money.
