I have a les paul with a rosewood and i love the way it feel under my fingers. i have a fender strat that has a maple and i find it to be gummy because of the finish placed on the maple neck. so i want to find a rosewood neck for a replacement currently im looking at ebay.

I like rosewood too...It gives a more mellow sound, and I like the smoothness. The only pain is the fact that it gets dirty pretty easily. I have played with maple before, and I didn't really care for it... but it's really all personal preference- it's almost a 50/50 split

It doesn't make any difference to me. Certain guitars sound better with maple, others with rosewood. I can't imagine a maple LP, nor would I want rosewood on my '52 RI tele.

I think maple looks better on Strats & Teles.

I'm going to have to do a no vote on this one and straddle the fence. I want to get a maple board tele quite badly. Everything I have at the moment (except for one ebony) is rosewood, and I feel as though I need something to buck the trend.

I agree with ACFixer, rosewood on a tele just doesn't seem right.

I'm with you!

And nitpicking on the original post: I guess we are talking about fingerboards, not necks.

Anything goes! Maple does look better on Fenders, though.

I never saw a Gibby with a maple board. Far as I know they're all rosewood. Only guitar I got with a maple board is my Tele but I used to have a Tele with rosewood and it was nice too.

The guitarist in my brother-in-law's band has a Gibson LP with a maple fretboard. He bought it off the wall of a Sam Ash in NY back in the 80's. There are a few special Gibson models that have had maple fretboards, but they are rare.

I've got two of each. Can't decide which I like better. Not a real big issue with me.

In my opinion maple is better. I have two strats, one glossy maple and the other standard rosewood the maple plays A LOT smoother if your hands are clean and dry (because of the lacquer I'm guession).

It all depends on the guitar. A Les Paul isn't a Les Paul without rosewood, and a 'Tele isn't a 'Tele without maple. Overall, it's a 50/50 split for me.
