I'm just curious what string gauges and brands ya'll are using. Also, it'd help to know the guitar and anything distinctive about how you have it set-up.
I use an Epi Les Paul Premium Plus, and just get whatever $5 strings they have their in either .11 or .12. I like my strings relatively heavy. Better tone, better feel. True enough, it's not as "fast," but I'm not much into speed playing anyway.
How about the rest of you? Also, what are some very good brands of electric strings? |

Ooh, 9's. C'mon, you can do better than that.
Out of all the brands, how many of you have tried most of them? And which brands seem "best" to you? |

| mamsteen plays with a hybrid set that goes from 8-46, and vai plays with 10-46 and 9-44(?), so there's nothing wrong with 9s, just for different applications. |

I was joking around with him, for the most part.
I'm getting sort of frustrated about strings. All the music stores around me don't even carry .12's, so I haven't been able to use those lately. I'm more used to .12's than .11's, the .11's just seem too light to me. Pretty soon I'll be moving to .13's, though. |

10-46, 10-52... and I've been thinking of going back to 9-46 to practice country playing, tens feel too heavy for that. Many my fave pro guitarists play 9s, so thicker strings was never a must for me in that respect. But 9s just feel wimpy and I feel I lose control (on vibratos etc).
I play Webstrings.com. But have liked Ernie Balls the best, for no real reason really. |

| my string history: started with 9-42 because that's what the factory strings were on my first guitar, but before then i had been playing my brother's guitar with 10-46. first time i changed strings, i put on D`Addario 10-46, then i later switched to DR 10-46, and then DR 11-50 because i thought it would be better with all strings one step down. then i switched to GHS 11-50, and was amazed at the clarity, and harmonic sustain vs other strings. then i started mixing sets, i used the bottom 3 strings from an 11 set, and the top 3 from a 10s set, this worked well, but was costly. then i changed my mix to bottom strings from a 12s set and top from a 9s set, i enjoyed this setup, but felt the 9s were too thin and i couldn't grip them as easily as 10s. after some decisions i concluded that 11 dollars every string change was too much, so i went back to 10-46 ghs, and have been using it ever since. |

| Ah, finally got myself a set of 12-54's! These things are beautiful. So much easier on my hands. I forgot how much *Poop* I sound when I use the .11's and below... having a wound 3rd really makes a difference. |

I would say for your kind of playing that you should go with power slinkys.
I play hard on my guitar and i have been using the same slinkys for over 4 months |

| I have found that Elixir strings break easily for me. I use them for my electric. Does any one else have this problem? Do they hold up better on acoustics than electrics? And, are they a worthy choice of strings, or should I go with something else? (I started playing guitar in March, so I am just a beginner). Thanks |

I like the Blue Steel strings... If your starting out go for Earnie Ball super slinkies. They are easier on your fingers. If you are a journeyman step up and play thicker strings. The thicker, the better the sound in my opinion.
