Hello.

I have recently began teaching myself how to play electric guitar. I have a question concerning finger placement. I have a problem with placing my fingers so that I am not pushing down on more than one string with the tip of my finger. I was wondering if there is any type of excercises that I can do to help stop this or will it just come in time.

the secret is practice-practice-practice....arch your fingers more by pushing your wrist more forward (uncomfortable at first)......practice slowly to begin with so as to get it right....speed will come on its own the more/longer you practice-practice-practice. Cool

The wrist comment is right. The most efficient way to hold the left hand is in such a way that the wrist is straight and relaxed. Try holding your wrist straight and wiggle your fingers. Then try it with the wrist bent. You'll probably notice the difference.

i agree with them. just work at it. it will fell great when you get it. it just takes alot of practice and endurance. push through the pain.

Yes, and part of the wrist placement has to do with the thumb. Make sure you plant your thumb on the back of the neck. You should try chromatic exercises to build your strength and to develope coordination. Here's an example if you do not know what a chromatic scale is:

||--1--|--2--|--3--|--4--|--
||--1--|--2--|--3--|--4--|--
||--1--|--2--|--3--|--4--|--
||--1--|--2--|--3--|--4--|--
||--1--|--2--|--3--|--4--|--

Play each fret with a different finger. Make sure you use alternate picking... "Downstroke - Upstroke-Downstroke-Upstroke." Perform this exercise fifteen minutes each day for a month and you'll see remarkable progress.
