Can you buy a Fender straight from factory in Corona, Ca, or do you have to go through shops (guitarcenter, etc...)? If so, wll it be cheaper? Also, is there any advantage/disadvantage from buying standard american strat from musician's friend ($859 w/out tax) rather than from GuitarCenter for same price but with tax?

Fender does not sell standard products directly. You have to buy from a Fender dealer. Unless you want a custom made guitar from their Custom Shop, and then you're talking big bucks.

They would probably direct you to a licensed fender dealer.
